Shooting
Shooting is both a disciplined and exciting event that 493 squadron can offer you. We shoot both the 22.Rifle and L98 as well as other rifles on extra events and camps. To shoot, cadets must pass the current weapons handling test (WHT) which is valid for 6 months. The 22. rifle WHT is done at Squadron by a squadron leader but for the L98 and more advanced weaponry cadets must go on a camp in order to pass. In order to pass the weapons handling test cadets must show they can safely use the weapon. They must show that they can hold, reload and fire the weapon safely, as well as being able to understand basic range drill. After passing the test cadets get the chance to shoot weapons at shooting ranges around the country as well as electric ranges and air rifle ranges. Cadets who are good at shooting get the chance to compete at wing field day and if you show skill with the weapon you also get the chance to achieve a marksmanship with badge.
